Pisara Project: “Community Learning Hub-Caliwag Site Tutor’s Workshop”

Chalkboard and the Pasig Community Learning Hub collaborate once more in a successful effort to hold another Pisara Project entitled Community Learning Hub-Caliwag Site Tutor’s Workshop”. The workshop was held on November 27 and December 11, 2021, at the 8th Floor, Conference Room 03, Pasig City Hall, Pasig City.

Same as the past Pisara Projects, volunteer tutors from Pasig City attended and actively participated during the workshop. This is to further strengthen their teaching methods and techniques so that their time volunteering to children will be more efficient. It is very commendable how these volunteer tutors not only impart their time teaching children, but also allot time to continue learning new ways of teaching so they can assure that they deliver quality education.

The first part done last November 27, 2021, focused on the following:

  • Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers
  • Familiarization and review of place value
  • Reading and writing numbers up to 10,000
  • Roundup numbers
  • Word problems
Participants attentively listening to the speakers

The speaker for the first day was Ms. Arcely Mateo, a member of Chalkboard’s Tutor Success Team. She and Miss Rachelle Tablan have been consistent speakers for Pisara Project and have been a big help ever since. Mathematics is a subject that is challenging to many learners, but with continuous effort and concentration, learners can get good results from it. That is the very reason why Chalkboard through the Pisara Project has been very keen to discuss effective ways to communicate and teach Math to students.

Volunteer tutors were very attentive during the discussion and have expressed their willingness to really help students to learn and love Math. They believe that with patience and proper teaching methods, it will not be impossible to encourage more students to engage and participate during Math class.

The head of Pasig City, Mayor Vico Sotto, also took time off from his busy schedule to greet the participants of the Pisara Project. Participants and the Chalkboard team were also given the opportunity to have photos together with the humbled mayor. Since the beginning of the workshop, Mayor Vico had expressed how he appreciates these kinds of efforts that benefits the education of the Pasig students. He values the importance of education and how it can impact their day-to-day life as well as their future.

For the second part of the workshop held last December 11, 2021, the following activities were observed:

  • Math pedagogy
  • Methods and habits in computing
Participants focused on their activity for Pisara Project

Ms. Rachelle Tablan was the selected speaker to discuss and teach for the second day. Pedagogy is the art of teaching – it is the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept. And it certainly plays a big role with giving students an improved perception about Mathematics. Once the teachers have already assessed their students’ behavior during math, they can adjust and improve their pedagogy based on it. The students get to learn better because of the teachers’ enhanced teaching method.

Chalkboard is very grateful to help learners and volunteer tutors through the Pisara Project. Together with the Pasig Community Learning Hub, Chalkboard continues to aspire to do more of these workshops to attain better quality of education.
